PQP Google Classroom: Leadership Topic - Setting Direction

Our group had the opportunity to hear from two guest speakers: Sean Kelly, superintendent of Student Success (Intermediate and Senior) and Shelley Montgomery, superintendent of Student Success (Elementary). Both approached the idea of leadership aspirations from a very different perspective but each clearly communicated the importance of accepting leadership positions from a place of genuine concern to affect change.

Sean Kelly highlighted his journey to becoming a superintendent as an extension of the joy of teaching and the importance of maintaining a connection with student learning. From his own experience in the system as a student to his current position, Sean has clearly expressed his ideas about building relationships and accountability with oneself and the school communities. This idea of building relationships and accountability can only be achieved by securing a vision of education and your role within it.

Shelley Montgomery was able to communicate her love of using data to also provide a vision for the school community. She had stressed the importance of having a reciprocal relationship with the school community so that a shared vision can be developed. Shelley also highlighted the importance of data to gain a better understanding of the needs of the school and this can be used to facilitate change. Taken together, the community relationship and corresponding data can lead to understanding the bigger picture of school needs. Finally, Shelley explained the importance of finding the skills within the school to make a stronger team.

  • Catholic Framework - We should always consider Jesus as an example of leadership qualities!

  • This idea of thinking about Jesus’ leadership abilities such as an effective communicator, a role model, and visionary highlights the importance of demonstrating these qualities as leaders ourselves.

  • The Board Framework demonstrates the unique way that Catholic Education can provide a way to promote “discipleship” in our leadership. It is important to recognise that the board has a vision and that it is through the lens of discipleship that leaders can support and foster school communities.

  • It is also under the Student Achievement and Socio-Development Directions that we can foster a more focused vision of the school community and foster student success.
